Primary Aggregates

Primary aggregates consist of natural stone, quarried materials, and sand.

Type 1 Sub-base limestone

Clause 803 Type 1

Historically known as Type 1 MOT / DOT. It is a quarried stone. Graded 0–32mm.

Type 3  limestone

Clause 805 Type 3 Primary

This is very similar to Type 1, but has reduced fines in the mid-range.

6F5 Primary Aggregate

6F5 Primary

This material is normally 0mm (dust) up to 80mm but can go as high as 125mm.

Shingles and gravels

Shingles and Gravels

These materials are either quarried or marine-dredged.

10mm Shingle or Gravel (4mm–10mm)

20mm Shingle or Gravel (10mm–20mm)

40mm Shingle or gravel (20mm–40mm)

Ballast

Ballast

A mixture of sand and gravel, most common as 0mm–20mm, but also available at 0mm–40mm.

Sharp sand

Sharp Sand

0mm–4mm sand.

Reject sand

Reject Sand

This is an 'as dug' sand (which means literally as it comes from the ground). Unprocessed although occasionally screened.

Building sand

Building Sand

0mm–2mm sand. Commonly called 'soft sand'.

Gabion stone

Gabion Stone

Various sizes, normally 100mm–250mm. Can go up to 500mm.

Oversize reject stone

Oversize/Reject Stone

Can be any material that the quarry or washing plant has produced as a waste from manufacturing other products. Normally 40mm upwards.

SuDS aggregate

Permeable Paving – SuDS

SuDS (Sustainable Drainage System) permeable paving allows better drainage into the ground naturally, rather than run-off into man-made structures.

Recycled Aggregates

Product that has previously been used and is now being recycled into a new product.

Type 1 crushed concrete

Type 1 Clause 803 Crushed Concrete

Concrete from demolition sites put through crushing machines and screened to 0mm–40mm. It should have a high concrete content but can also contain brick and has been tested to Clause 803.

Type 1 concrete

Crushed concrete graded from 0mm–40mm, but no full Clause 803 test.

Crushed concrete

Historically referred to as '3-inch Down', or 'Crusher-Run'. Produced on-site. It is a 0mm–75mm crushed concrete (which will include brick) down to dust material. Used for temporary road surfaces, on-site compounds, and piling mats.

A recycled aggregate, washed or not-washed.

6F1 Selected Granular Material

6F1 Selected Granular Material

Described as concrete fines, produced on-site. It has a variety of uses including pipe bedding, capping layer, and backfill.

Described as concrete fines, produced off-site.

Soils

BS3882 topsoil and BS8601 sub-soil.

Topsoil

This can be a natural, or manufactured topsoil.

BS8601 Subsoil

BS8601 Sub-soil

Can be either a manufactured or a natural product.

Others

All ready mix concrete products comply with accredited quality assurance schemes and meet the relevant British and/or European standards.

Ready mix concrete

Ready Mix Concrete

Many different applications and mixes such as ST1 to ST5; C15/20 to C45. Multiple additives to help it perform in different environments, including underwater.

Asphalt

Asphalt

Commonly called Tarmac. Like ready mix concrete, it has many differing applications and mixes. AC10 Open to AC32 Dense.

Muck Away

Muck Away

3 fundamental types – Clean Inert; Non-Hazardous; and Hazardous.
